After the long summer months of fun and barbecuing, many people are getting ready to put their grills away for the year and prepair for the winter. I was never the kind of guy who liked winter so I can't stand the reality that summer is almost over, however that does not mean you have to stop grilling. Grilling during the winter months is pretty simple to do and it is nearly as easy as barbecuing during the warmer months, however a lot of folks just don't seem to really want to do it. These people do have a great reason for not wanting to cook outdoors in the cold though. I know I do not like standing out in the cold to much. Some people do not really enjoy standing outdoors in the cold cooking their food.
If you are one of the individuals who loves to grill outside in the wintertime, you have the right idea. I think that a lot of what drives folks to cook outside when it is cold out is the simple fact that these folks just seriously like food that is cooked on the grill. I am a person who will stand outside and grill even when it is freezing out and I know I could easily just cook that meat on my stove inside where it is comfy. I enjoy cooking outside when it is cold out even though I don't like the cold, but I have a nice gas grill on my back deck so it makes it a more enjoyable experience.
If you are barbecuing something in a cold climate you need to keep in mind that it might take a little longer to cook. It is easy to forget something like that, and you may have to use more heat depending on just how cold it is outside when you are grilling. The last thing you really want is for your food to be undercooked in the center so it makes sense to try and avoid that by turning up the heat on the grill a little more then you would if you where cooking when the weather was warmer.
One other thing you should do when you are grilling in the cold is to make sure you keep a lid on your grill. When you take the lid off your grill even for a minute or less the hot air escapes and the temperature inside the grill drops quickly. After you lift the lid and the hot air escapes, it takes a little while for it to get back up to temperature which means your grilling time will increase.
It is a little more difficult to control the temperature on a charcoal grill and you can't just turn a knob to get crank up the temperature either. Instead you will need to add more charcoal before you start and control the temperature with the dampers or vents on the top and bottom of your grill. It also helps to have a thermometer when you are doing this so you know how much heat you actually need to have. Different cuts of meat take different heat levels to come out right but if you know you need to keep the grilling surface at 500 degrees to grill that awesome steak, you can make sure it stays that temp all the way through the cooking cycle.
That's about it for grilling your food when it is cold out. So as you can see it really is pretty easy to grill in the winter although you will need to keep a closer eye on your temperature. I think that it is great to be able to have a nice hot grilled dinner during the winter months, and I think that it also makes them go by a little faster.
